BUGA Fibre Pavilion, Heilbronn (DEU)
ewo is the proud lighting partner of the award-winning BUGA Fiber Pavilion, which was built by the University of Stuttgart after years of bionic research.
A look into the future of construction
The project, which builds on years of biometric research, is run by the Institute for Conceptual Design and Construction (ICD) and the Institute for Building Structures and Structural Design (ITKE) at the University of Stuttgart. The BUGA Fibre Pavilion uses fibre composites commonly seen in biology for load-bearing purposes, incorporated into the pavilion’s own design and construction materials.
Hannes Wohlgemuth, CEO of ewo: "As a trained architect, innovative architectural projects really get my blood pumping. In this case, the interdisciplinarity of digital technologies and biological principles transcends established techniques and raises important questions about our everyday."

The lighting solutions
In association with light planning office Belzner Holmes Light-Design, ewo provided 120 spotlights mounted with various lighting distributions, for the beautiful illumination of the 400 square meter area. The lighting concept underlines the apparent weightlessness of the architectural structure, with custom-made luminaires accentuating the supporting elements from the inside, attached ends of each section.
The creative expressiveness of the almost transparent waveform design works in symbiosis with computer-aided construction and robot production, compliant with the strict German building regulations.
The BUGA Fibre Pavilion won the Beyond Bauhaus Award 2019 and the Iconic Award 2019 in the Innovative Architecture category.
