Miami Design District, Miami (USA)
The global design, art and fashion center, the Miami Design District, was expanded in 2016 with new promenades and public spaces equipped with ewo's UP series urban furniture.
Urban furniture for a global design, art and fashion center
In recent decades, the Miami Design District has developed dynamically into a global design, art and fashion center. In 2002, numerous events of the first Art Basel Miami took place here. What began as an insider tip for furniture connoisseurs and interior designers has developed into a trendy district for galleries, restaurants, architecture firms and international designer brands.
At the end of 2016, a further step was taken towards transforming the district: New promenades and public squares were created, and buildings by renowned and avant-garde architects were planned around them—stores, art spaces such as the Institute of Contemporary Art Miami (ICA) and a hotel, designed by architects Studio Gang / Neri & Hu, as well as restaurants of national importance. All the design elements of the pedestrian zone were intended to emphasize the unique flair of this new district. That's why the urban planners were looking for litter garbage cans, ashtrays and bicycle racks "that look good and are recognizably part of a family of objects, so that the special character of the district is emphasized."

Bollard with numerous functions
They found what they were looking for in our urban furniture from the UP–Series. This was developed for ewo by the Norwegian design group Norway Says: The basic shape of the bollard has various openings that allow for numerous possible functions—including lighting—in a characteristic product shape. For example, several BR21 bollards can be used to lean against and block off bicycles, while another version serves as an ashtray (BD23) with a removable cover for emptying. The WR21 litter garbage cans with a 45 l capacity are also part of this design-oriented urban furniture. All products in the UP series each have an LED module with 8 high-performance LEDs with a color temperature of 4,000 K for accent lighting in the foot area. Some minor adjustments were also made for the Miami project, including laser-cut pictograms backed with sheet metal.
In close proximity to art and design installations by John Baldessari, the Buckminster Fuller Institute, Konstantin Grcic, Zaha Hadid and Marc Newson, among others, ewo urban furniture contributes to the unique ambience of the Miami Design District.
“We were looking for something that looks good and is recognizably part of a family of objects, so that the special character of the district is emphasized.
