Petuelpark, Munich (DEU)

Function meets light art – ewo Chameleon completes the lighting concept at Petuelpark Munich

Functional pathway lighting for a high-traffic urban park

Petuelpark is located in the heart of Munich, connecting two districts that the Mittlerer Ring had separated for decades. Since 2004, the park stretches across the roof of the Petueltunnel, serving simultaneously as green space, cycling route and pedestrian connection. The original lighting concept with around 70 stainless steel steles was part of the park’s identity, but no longer met today’s requirements for functional pathway lighting. In 2025, the City of Munich upgraded the lighting of the heavily used cycle paths. The ewo outdoor projector Chameleon came out on top in a comparison of leading European manufacturers.

An artistic concept from 2004 and its limitations

At its opening, Petuelpark received an artistic lighting concept made possible in part by BMW. Converted car headlights mounted in stainless steel steles created coloured points of light and shaped the character of the installation. Over time, the weaknesses of the system became apparent. Glare, poor lighting performance and outdated technology made a redesign of the pathway lighting necessary. The cycle paths through the park form part of the city’s east-west cycling network and are used intensively every day. They require a defined, uniform light distribution that the existing steles were unable to deliver.

Two reasons for choosing ewo

The City of Munich compared products from leading European manufacturers. The ewo Chameleon was convincing on two counts. The AS 08 optic delivered the light distribution that matched the geometry of the pathways most precisely. No competing product achieved comparable precision and effectiveness. At the same time, the modular system of the Chameleon luminaires made it possible to implement a second light head per mast with amber LED and integrated motion sensor, exactly as specified by the city. This combination of photometric performance and specification flexibility was the decisive reason for selecting the ewo solution. Both Chameleon heads were attached to the existing galvanised masts using clamps, without any major intervention in the existing infrastructure.

White light for safe orientation, amber light for the night

The second Chameleon head per mast is fitted with amber LEDs and takes over during the quiet night-time hours when activity is low. Amber light contains virtually no blue components. For nocturnal insects and light-sensitive species, it is significantly less attractive than white light with a full spectrum. As soon as the integrated motion sensor detects activity, the functional white light component switches on and provides orientation and safety for park users. Control is via a Zhaga socket as a standardised interface to a third-party control system. Since Petuelpark is in use almost continuously, white light is in practice the dominant operating mode.

“We selected ewo for its photometric precision and high flexibility in implementing the custom specification
