Reichsbrücke, Vienna (AUT)
ewo has developed spherical luminaires for the historic Reichsbrücke bridge in Vienna, which have become a distinctive feature of the city.
Custom-made sphere lights for traditional monument
ewo won a Europe-wide tender and was commissioned to design and manufacture custom-made luminaires for Vienna's Reichsbrücke bridge, which have now become a distinctive feature of the city.
Due to the efficiency advantages of LED lights, the lighting of Vienna's Reichsbrücke bridge needed to be redesigned. ewo won a Europe-wide tender and secured the contract. The result was spherical “Reichsbrücken luminaires” that are unique to this Viennese road monument.
“The fact that we were able to hold our own in the highly competitive tenders issued by the City of Vienna and are now able to provide feel-good lighting in this culturally rich metropolis is a milestone for our company,” says ewo CEO Hannes Wohlgemuth.

Special requirements for special systems
A total of 316 luminaires were manufactured. The Vienna sphere luminaires are made of high-quality PMMA material, which allows the light to be emitted evenly throughout the sphere to create diffuse yet precise illumination. With a diameter of 850 mm and a weight of 29 kg, the spheres are eye-catching even from a distance—and have become an unmistakable feature of this historic bridge.
“The collaboration with ewo, and especially with founder and technical director Ernst Wohlgemuth, was a genuine partnership between equals.
