Innovative lighting for Soboras Church in Kaunas: aesthetics and monument protection in harmony
Together with lighting designer Sarunas Noskaitis from Energy Green and under the project management of Povilas Klimas, ewo was commissioned to equip the Soboras Church in the Lithuanian city of Kaunas with a new lighting system.
For this project, the client had no specific design requirements, but emphasized the importance of an aesthetically pleasing result that also complied with heritage conservation and lighting regulations. ewo and its partners therefore set themselves the task of not only enhancing the beauty of the building with the new lighting—but also reducing glare and spill light to ensure visual comfort and safety for visitors to this public space.
This creative freedom enabled ewo and its partners to develop an innovative and unique lighting concept—which was then refined following initial lighting tests and feedback from those responsible. This process ultimately ensured that the Soboras Church received lighting that perfectly met the vision and requirements of the project.
The following ewo products were used for the project:
- P200
- P160
- P80
- Chameleon C210 Integral

Customized DALI lighting for the Soboras Church: efficiency, aesthetics and intelligent control combined
All luminaires were equipped with DALI drivers and can therefore be controlled and personalized. Lighting scenes for both the façade and the exterior have been pre-installed, which in turn helps to visually highlight the most beautiful features of the church. The luminaires have also been integrated into the city's smart system, ensuring optimum performance and energy efficiency.
"The lighting design has the task of enhancing the architecture without overshadowing it. The project also called for a balance between aesthetics and functionality—the lighting had to be energy-efficient on the one hand and have a positive effect on visitors on the other."
The customer was very satisfied with the course of the project and with the end result—the problem-free control and management of the lighting, a trademark of ewo products, was particularly impressive.
“For us, the project was a significant and challenging undertaking from the outset—if only because of its size and cultural importance, as Soboras Church is one of the most important buildings in the city of Kaunas.
