Smart lighting to combat rising electricity prices
In Villandro, the energy consumption of public lighting has been reduced by 45% thanks to ewo's intelligent lighting management system, halving the municipality's electricity costs.
The municipality of Villandro recognized the potential of intelligent lighting early on. In 2019, more than 130 smart luminaires from the manufacturer ewo were installed in Villandro based on a lighting design concept by Studio Troi and Schenk.
Rising electricity prices are forcing administrations to review their energy expenditure. And ewo can offer a sustainable solution with intelligent lighting systems. Almost halving Villandro's expenditure did not require a new installation, but a single mouse click to dim certain groups of luminaires at set times. All standards are met and safety is guaranteed. A convincing reason to use flexible and intelligent lighting systems.
With the intelligent lighting system from ewo, networked luminaires can be controlled via a cloud solution. A major advantage is the ability to group luminaires in such a way that there are different lighting scenes for different areas of a city. In Villandro, for example, a reduction in kW/h consumption of up to 69% was achieved for pedestrian zones and sidewalks using multi-level dimming. Despite sharp price increases, Villandro will thus reduce its annual expenditure for the entire lighting system by up to 45%. Villandro is thus taking on a pioneering role in South Tyrol.

Smart lighting for a quick response
"In view of the high energy prices, we have already considered cost savings several times in the municipal committee. The proposal from ewo contained clear scenarios with calculated light intensity and potential savings for the respective streets. I am pleased to have installed a smart lighting system with a local partner a few years ago, where each light point can be controlled centrally at the touch of a button and dimmed gradually as required. I am particularly pleased that this lighting system already complies with the new regulations and that we can achieve high savings just by making adjustments to the existing system without additional investment," says Mayor Walter Baumgartner about the project.
The new lighting law of July 5 (Provincial Decree No. 477) must also be understood in the context of the sustainability strategy of the province of South Tyrol, as every area, including street lighting, must make a contribution to this overall vision. The ewo systems are ready for this.
“After the first changeover, I didn't receive any negative feedback from the public due to the reduced light intensity at night, which is why we went through with the whole concept—from one night to the next, so to speak.
Walter Baumgartner, Mayor of Villandro
