Lithuania—Aesthetic and energy-efficient lighting for church

Together with lighting designer Sarunas Noskaitis from Energy Green and under the project management of Povilas Klimas, ewo was commissioned to equip the Soboras Church in the Lithuanian city of Kaunas with a new lighting system.

The client had no specific design requirements but emphasized the importance of an aesthetically pleasing result that also complies with heritage conservation and lighting regulations. ewo, along with its partners, set itself the task of not only enhancing the beauty of the building with the new lighting—but also reducing glare and spill light, ensuring visual comfort and safety for visitors to this public space.

The creative freedom allowed ewo and its partners to develop an innovative and unique lighting concept—which was then refined after initial lighting tests and feedback from those responsible parties. This process ultimately ensured that the Soboras church received lighting that perfectly met the vision and requirements of the project. Watch the project video on YouTube.

The following ewo products were used for the project:

All luminaires are equipped with DALI drivers and can therefore be controlled and customized. Lighting scenes for both the façade and the exterior have been pre-installed, which in turn helps to visually highlight the most beautiful features of the church. The luminaires have also been integrated into the city’s smart system, ensuring optimal performance and energy efficiency.

"For us, the project was a significant and challenging undertaking from the start—if only because of its size and cultural importance, as Soboras Church is one of the most important buildings in the city of Kaunas," says Saša Pajdić, Sales Director of Central Eastern Europe at ewo. "The lighting design has the task of enhancing the architecture without overshadowing it. The project also required a balance between aesthetics and functionality—the lighting had to be energy efficient on the one hand, and have a positive effect on visitors on the other."

The customer was very satisfied with the project process and the final result—the ease of control and management of the lighting, a hallmark of ewo products, was particularly impressive.
