Smart lighting for logistics centre, Zurich, Switzerland

The Embraport logistics center in Zurich commissioned ewo, in collaboration with Borri Engineering, to design and implement a new smart lighting system. In addition to pole-mounted systems, PIR sensors and Leitfeld software were used.

Embraport is the largest and most diverse logistics hub in the Zurich city area. Located in the heart of Switzerland’s most economically robust region, it covers an area of 70 kilometers, servicing nearly half of the country’s consumers and manufacturing output. Thanks to its strong relationship with lighting designers Borri Engineering, ewo was considered for the lighting upgrade at Embraport.

ewo submitted its FA lighting systems for consideration, offering the client the option to manage the entire project – utilizing other manufacturers’ luminaires if need be – through connexx’s Leitfeld software.

This proposal ultimately won ewo the business, and the following luminaries were installed during the first quarter of the project:

  • 4 FA170 luminaires
  • 4 FA770 luminaires
  • 8 FA770 ceiling mounted luminaries

All lighting systems were equipped with PIR sensors to detect temperature changes – the complexity of working with these sensors makes this a particularly special feature. Two relays were integrated to manage billboards, which were programmed to match the luminaire schedules. In addition to the timed dimming and illumination programs specified by the client, a light sensor activates the luminaires during the daytime when outdoor light levels are insufficient.

Another special feature of the project was environmentally focused smart lighting management: from Monday to Friday a weekly scene is activated, while on weekends the lights generally remain off and are turned on only where necessary, thanks to motion sensors; a system that benefits surrounding wildlife and nature.

The project is ongoing: PIR sensors are being calibrated, with various tests conducted to ensure that the motion sensors work to the customer’s satisfaction.

In the coming years, the project will continue to develop, as will the sophistication of the Leitfeld software. This was one of the factors that led the customer to choose ewo and the connexx system.
