Energy-saving LED upgrade at Zurich airport
The first construction work on Zurich Airport began in 1946, and it was officially opened in 1948. Today, with about 29 million passengers and about 250,000 takeoffs and landings a year, Zurich Airport is the largest airport in Switzerland.
In 2012, ewo installed a test pole with seven F32 projectors, which impressed the client and led to several luminaire orders in subsequent years. Finally, in 2022, ewo was contracted to provide LED lighting for the airport’s aprons. Light measurement of the area after installation, was carried out exclusively using ewo’s proprietary measuring device, LightLogger.
The distinguishing feature of this project is the conversion of traditional luminaires to LEDs – the following factors were crucial objectives in its realization:
- Reduced energy consumption
- Reduced maintenance costs
- Increased reliability and minimization of spare parts stock levels (and therefore storage)
- DALI driver control
To date, ewo has installed 288 R–System gen3 R2 model floodlights on 116 poles, at around 25 meters high at Zurich Airport; all lights are equipped with asymmetric EP09 lenses with combined left-right and Full-Cut-Off optics.
Installation of the new lighting system was completed in November 2023.
