Illuminating large areas with minimal light pollution

ewo’s development of a new generation of floodlights warrants a look back at the landmark projects paving the way for innovation in this field, as with the illumination of Rotterdam The Hague Airport in 2018.

This airport is one of more than 100 in which ewo floodlights have reduced energy usage and light pollution. Energy saving is important due to Netherlands’ status as one of the most densely populated nations in Europe, which often brings notable concerns about light and emission.

Such priorities were stated upfront by Rotterdam The Hague Airport, which agreed ewo’s partnership with Licht NL was one of the only able to offer full-cut-off floodlights with use of visors, bringing industry-leading accuracy of illumination. The ability to combine distributions within one luminaire was an important feature.

Schiphol and their advisors tested, re-tested and negotiated all proposals in collaboration with the client SPIE Infra Sliedrecht, with ewo’s floodlights eventually chosen.

ewo’s partners Licht NL were involved in many concept-proofing processes due to their belief that competitors’ proposals could be enormously expensive by comparison. The resulting project – one of their first with ewo – involved a direct partnership and a complete switch from halogen to more efficient LED technology.

The airport made use of ewo’s F–System LARGE, for the complete replacement of the main apron alongside the new-improved lighting plan. Luminaires were mounted on thirteen lighting poles twenty metres high.

Ali Haider, Key Account Manager at Licht NL said:
“I received the assignment and noticed that smart lighting had not been taken into consideration by Schiphol at an earlier stage. They saw the advantage, demonstrated by various financial calculations, that lighting control would yield high energy savings in the short and long term.”

ewo CEO Hannes Wohlgemuth said:
“Projects like these are a testament to the longevity of our floodlights and their capacity to illuminate large areas with minimal wastage. Our work with the collaborators on this project has gone from strength to strength and we value their expertise as we continue to deliver fantastic lighting together.”

Smart lighting systems were also implemented, to ensure that dormant aprons did not waste power, illuminating only for approaching aircraft and planes that remained at the airport.
