UNIFORM LIGHTING FOR A RECREATIONAL AREA IN BRISBANE

As part of the redevelopment of a natural area in the northern suburbs of Brisbane, a 12.7-hectare sports and recreation area has been created for local people: the District Sports Park Nudgee Recreation Reserve. The park offers sports fields for touch football, cricket and soccer, a BMX track, and a dog-free area. A clubhouse, fitness area, walking and biking trails, playground and more have also been provided. ewo was commissioned to equip the area with a high-quality LED lighting system.

Among the project requirements was the need to work within very strict parameters (the facility is located only 14 km from Brisbane Airport). In addition, it was essential to prevent light from encroaching into the surrounding natural and residential areas, as well as the night sky.

For the project, 135 units of the R–System gen4 were used. This lighting system offers several advantages:

  • Future-proof construction of both the optical compartment and individual components.
  • Low drag coefficient due to the small frontal area of horizontally mounted systems.
  • GORE® IP68 valves that effectively reduce condensation, thus preventing corrosion of electronic components

Forward Throw Asymmetric optics were used for separate left and right illumination, which allowed horizontal mounting of the fixtures. This made it possible to meet all “Dark-Sky” requirements, reduce glare, and minimize the number of fixtures needed.

ewo stood out from the competition, as its optics eliminate the need for upward tilting of luminaires and poles. The optics bring high uniformity, reducing the number of luminaires and poles required and – therefore – produce lower running costs.
