Bill Brown Reserve, Brisbane (AUS)

The Bill Brown Reserve sports park was completely redesigned in 2020 and now shines in a tailor-made lighting concept from ewo.

Versatile floodlights for multi-purpose facilities

The park in the Australian state of Queensland offers a wide range of sports and recreational facilities: four optimally lit netball courts and a spacious green recreational open space make the 3.7-hectare site, which had been used as a landfill since the 1980s, a place of recreation for the citizens of Brisbane. The necessary traffic and parking infrastructure has also been equipped with quality-oriented lighting.

Twenty R–System gen1 R3 floodlights provide the netball courts with uniform illumination that is perfectly tailored to the project requirements and reduces glare. Equipped with three panels and asymmetrical, forward-facing distribution characteristics, the luminaires distribute the light discreetly and only within the intended lighting area, significantly improving visibility during play.

The principle lighting engineer for the project summarizes: “The main challenge of the Bill Brown Reserve Sports Park project related to the requirement for lighting multiple netball courts simultaneously due to major spatial limitations, while also complying with competitive standards around lighting glare and uniformity. The ewo R–System luminaires were able to achieve outstanding results through an even spread of forward throw lighting combined with a sharp uplighting cut-off effect. This is in addition to the LED optical lenses utilised for diffusing & reducing direct gameplay glare, that has provided quality-compliant lighting for a comfortable natural environment lasting well into the night”.

Uniform illumination for parking lots

In the parking lots, however, the F–System XS was used, combining different light distributions in each of the 31 luminaires. Asymmetrical lens optics by ewo provide an additional light cone to the front and side. Here, they were used in combination with symmetrical, wide-beam lenses to ensure uniform illumination regardless of the position of the luminaires on the site, thus ensuring maximum safety and quality.

“Our focus of sports illumination is one of our most recent developments, that shows that our development never stands still. Power and precision meets outstanding performance and it’s such a thrill to contribute to this landfill-to-recreational-space initiative, benefitting so many in the local community.”, says ewo CEO Hannes Wohlgemuth.

The biggest challenge was to comply with all competition regulations regarding glare protection and lighting uniformity. With the R–System from ewo, we were able to achieve excellent results.
