A sustainable lighting plan for Tamaki Drive: safe and environmentally friendly through Auckland
Glen Innes to Tamaki Drive, "Te Ara Ki Uta Tai" (the way of the land and the sea) in Maori, is a seven-kilometer pedestrian and cycle path that connects Auckland's city center with the city's eastern suburbs. One of the biggest challenges of the project was to create lighting that would ensure the safety of pedestrians and cyclists while protecting the environment.
Tamaki Drive runs through a scenic coastal area and it was therefore important not to detract from the natural beauty with the lighting. However, it still needed to be able to adequately illuminate the 4.6 meter wide path and promenade sections. In addition, the project had to meet strict environmental requirements, including the protection of the dark sky.

Customized lighting solution for the Tamaki Drive
The solution for illuminating the path was to use 237 ID2 handrail luminaires, which were integrated at a distance of 10 meters and arranged in opposite directions. Decisive factors in the choice of ID2 handrail luminaires were their high-quality appearance, heat dissipation, lifetime and safe illumination of the promenade. A tailor-made bracket and a special cover plate were developed for mounting the luminaires in the handrail.
The client is very pleased with the result as it provides a high level of visual comfort, diffused light control and uniformity. The project was awarded the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) Award of Merit 2022 for its innovative design and environmental sustainability.
“ewo's bespoke solution helped make sense of Tamaki Drive as key infrastructure for the Auckland region. The client is very pleased with the result as it provides a high level of visual comfort, stray light control and uniformity.
