ewo Lighting for the New Heidepark Quarter in Munich
In the north of Munich, a new urban quarter is taking shape on the site of the former Bayernkaserne barracks. Neufreimann brings together housing, education and public space across 48 hectares of former military land. Sedlmayr Grund und Immobilien AG has completed the first residential development there with Heidepark. ewo supplied the exterior lighting for the pedestrian routes, entrance areas and communal spaces using FA bollard luminaires and FA mast luminaires.
A Quarter for up to 15,000 People
The Bayernkaserne site was released in 2011. Since then, the city of Munich has been developing a new urban quarter there in stages. A consortium led by Max Dudler, together with Hilmer Sattler and AGS Garten and mahl.gebhard.konzepte, won the urban planning competition. By 2030, the site is set to provide housing for up to 15,000 people, complemented by educational facilities, commercial space and public areas. The Bildungscampus Neufreimann, realised by a+r Architekten and also supplied with exterior lighting by ewo, is already in use. Sedlmayr Grund und Immobilien AG is developing Heidepark across four construction plots with a total of around 1,200 rental apartments. The first construction phase, plot MU1-17, was occupied in April 2025. Max Dudler designed this section: 253 privately financed residential units, eight commercial units and communal roof gardens that give residents outdoor space on multiple levels. The courtyard house typology gives the buildings quiet, semi-public inner courtyards. The two centrally located buildings frame the public Quartiersplatz Ost, which marks the start of the carfree green boulevard. This runs as a connecting spine through the entire new district.

Heidepark: Roof Terraces with a View
HL LichtTechnik from Ruhpolding implemented the lighting concept using different versions of the ewo FA family. FA bollard luminaires are used for the pedestrian routes, inner courtyards and roof terraces, while FA mast luminaires cover the main access areas. The consistent design language of the FA family makes it possible to achieve different light distributions and mounting heights while maintaining the visual coherence of the outdoor spaces. In the evening, the bollard and mast luminaires appear as quiet points of light that make paths legible and support time spent outdoors without dominating the atmosphere of the courtyards and squares.

“Residential quarters place particular demands on exterior lighting. Light here must do more than provide orientation: it gives the outdoor space a quality that invites people to linger. Heidepark shows how the FA family achieves exactly that across very different types of open space, from access roads to rooftop gardens
