LED conversion with electricity savings at Zurich Airport

Since 2012, ewo has completed several contracts at Zurich Airport ZRH. In 2022, we were finally commissioned to completely convert the airport's stands to LED lighting.

The first construction work on Zurich Airport began in 1946 and it was finally officially opened in 1948. Today, Zurich Airport is the largest airport in Switzerland with around 29 million passengers and around 250,000 take-offs and landings per year.

In 2012, ewo installed a test mast with seven F32 floodlights, which convinced the customer and provided the impetus for several orders in the following years. In 2022, ewo was finally commissioned to equip the airport's stands with LED lighting. The lighting survey of the area after installation was carried out exclusively using the LightLogger measuring device developed by ewo.

The special feature of this project is the conversion from conventional lighting fixtures to LEDs. The following factors were decisive for the decision:

  • Reduction of electricity consumption
  • Reduction in maintenance costs
  • Increased reliability and minimization of spare parts inventory
  • Individual control options with DALI driver

Special requirements for a special system

To date, ewo has installed a total of 288 R–System gen3 R2 model floodlights on 116 poles around 25 m high at Zurich Airport—all the luminaires have EP09 asymmetrical lenses with combined left-right optics and full cuf-off.

In particular, the uniformity of the lighting achieved by the in-house developed optics has repeatedly resulted in positive feedback from Flughafen Zürich AG.

The fact that we were ultimately able to prevail against global competitors once again confirms the high quality and technical innovation behind ewo's products.
