kärnten.museum, Klagenfurt (AUT)

ewo was commissioned to illuminate the exterior of the kärnten.museum as part of the "Glacis Klagenfurt" project to redesign the urban space.

Lighting within its context

As part of the first construction lot, the open and green spaces in front of the Landesmuseum and between the adjacent historical buildings were transformed into a square, making it a place of encounter and exchange between the city's inhabitants and between art and culture.

The kärnten.museum was recently awarded the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality, presented by ICOM and the Austrian Museums Association, and the "Bauherr:innenpreis 2023", awarded by the Central Association of Austrian Architects.

For the outdoor area of the State Museum, the client wanted a lighting concept that would blend in with the architectural and landscape context. The functional and effect lighting, which is directed onto the facades of the historic buildings, was to be combined in a single lighting system and not installed as ground or facade luminaires. The same luminaires should also be used in future to adequately illuminate the recently planted trees along the square.

Individual solution with standard luminaires

Thanks to their high modularity, the solution was found in the ewo FA770 luminaires. In the 24 pole-mounted luminaires arranged around the building, there are two types of asymmetric light distribution, depending on the positioning—Asymmetric Side and Forward Throw and Asymmetric Extra Side Throw. One lens is optimized for illuminating the square, footpaths and cycle paths and the other for illuminating the adjacent street.

In addition to the functional light, an EL light module with an Asymmetric Extra Forward satin-finish lens was installed along the product mast for building façades. Finally, the luminaires were prepared for the future installation of Chameleon projectors for tree lighting. The carefully chosen paint finish in AkzoNobel Mars harmonizes perfectly with the color of the building as well as with the green areas, making the luminaires a discreet element of urban furniture. Equipped with a Zhaga base for the OLC system, the luminaires could also be integrated into Klagenfurt's existing lighting control system.

ewo was able to prevail over its competitors in the project, which fits perfectly into the company's philosophy of "empowering wellbeing outdoors", primarily thanks to its flexibility and fast response times. Efficient project management in all its phases and the specifications set out in the tender were also important factors in the awarding of the contract. Thanks to the extremely satisfactory results, ewo will also be involved in the next construction lot for the redesign of the "Glacis Klagenfurt" urban space. The project also involves other important buildings such as the provincial government, the Chamber of Agriculture and the Klagenfurt Concert Hall.
